The Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) has announced the appointment of Alhaji Lukman Adedire as its new Secretary General, a move that underscores the organisation’s commitment to strengthening its global operations and fostering Yoruba unity across the diaspora.
The appointment, which took effect on October 26, 2025, followed the formal endorsement of Adedire by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland and Global Convener of OPU, Iba Gani Adams.
Until his elevation, Adedire served as the Deputy Secretary General of OPU Worldwide, a position he had held since 2021. Over the years, he has been instrumental in coordinating international programmes and supporting initiatives that promote Yoruba culture, development, and collaboration.
In a statement issued by OPU’s Publicity Secretary, Victor Akingbayi, Iba Gani Adams expressed confidence in Adedire’s leadership abilities, describing him as a visionary and dedicated leader whose passion for Yoruba advancement has been consistently demonstrated through his service.
“As Secretary General, Alhaji Adedire will oversee the strategic and operational functions of the OPU, strengthen international partnerships, and drive programmes aimed at advancing the welfare, unity, and progress of Yoruba people globally,” Akingbayi said.
He added that Adedire’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the union’s mission to promote Yoruba cultural heritage and foster socio-economic development among Yoruba communities worldwide.
