Access Bank Plc: Africa’s banking gateway to the world

Access Bank

Access B Bank Plc is Nigeria’s largest bank by assets and Africa’s leading financial institution by customer base, serving more than 60 million customers across 22 countries.

With headquarters on Victoria Island, Lagos, the bank operates as a full-service commercial institution and is a key subsidiary of Access Holdings Plc, one of Africa’s most diversified financial services groups.

Founded in 1989, Access Bank began operations as a modest commercial bank but has since grown into a Tier-1 financial powerhouse. It was listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) in 1998, marking a major step in its expansion journey. Over the years, the bank has pursued aggressive growth through strategic mergers and acquisitions. The most notable was its 2019 merger with Diamond Bank, which significantly expanded its retail banking base and cemented its position as Nigeria’s largest bank by customer numbers.

Access Bank boasts an asset base exceeding ₦40 trillion and a strong presence across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Its international operations span subsidiaries in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as branches and representative offices in the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. This global expansion reflects its ambition to become Africa’s gateway to the world.

The bank operates through three main business segments: personal banking, business banking, as well as corporate and investment banking. Its personal banking services include savings accounts, loans, and digital solutions such as the widely used *901# USSD banking platform, which allows customers to conduct transactions without internet access. For businesses, Access Bank provides financing, trade services, and advisory solutions tailored to small, medium, and large enterprises. Its corporate banking arm serves multinational companies with structured financial solutions and investment support.

Beyond traditional banking, Access Bank has positioned itself as a driver of financial literacy and entrepreneurship in Nigeria and other markets. It regularly organises business clinics, workshops, and community engagement programmes designed to support small business growth and improve financial inclusion.

Sustainability is also a core part of the bank’s strategy. Access Bank integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its operations and has earned recognition for its efforts in sustainability, community development, and environmental responsibility.

In recent years, the bank has expanded its digital innovation portfolio, introducing advanced mobile banking platforms and partnerships that enhance customer experience. It has also ventured into new product offerings, including international card services and fintech-driven solutions.

With its strong capital base, extensive customer reach, and expanding global presence, Access Bank continues to play a central role in Nigeria’s financial sector while steadily strengthening its position as one of Africa’s most influential banking institutions.

Access Bank is the winner of The Sun Bank of the Year Award 2026.
