The Barrister Julius Abure-led leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has warned the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and some suspended members of the party, including Senators Esther Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, to desist from using the party’s name to engage in what it described as illegal political activities.

The party cautioned that the Abia deputy governor could not hide under the cover of official immunity to perpetrate illegality, noting that any offence committed while in office could be prosecuted after his tenure.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement on Wednesday urged the public to be wary of what it called political fraud allegedly being carried out by Engr. Emetu, the suspended senators, and their associates through the solicitation of membership registration and the promotion of an illegal national convention.

The party stressed that it had already conducted a valid national convention in March 2024 and had since rolled out both online and physical membership registration across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, recording what it described as “astronomical figures.”

According to the statement, the party would deploy all lawful means to challenge any fraudulent actions by individuals or groups, past or present, associated with the Labour Party who undermine its constitution, rules, and regulations.

The party also reacted to a viral video showing Engr. Emetu, Senators Nenadi Usman and Nwokocha, among others, allegedly unveiling and inaugurating what was termed an “LP National Steering Committee for membership registration,” describing the exercise as illegal and unauthorised.

“We do not know which Labour Party these people are working for or under whose authority they are acting, especially when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has since recognised the authentic leadership of the Labour Party,” the statement said.

The spokesman further disclosed that INEC recently monitored its congresses across 35 states and the FCT, with the exception of Abia State due to a court order, and also supervised processes leading to the party’s participation in the 2026 governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.

The party criticised the presence of a social activist known as “Hush Mummy” at the event, noting that she had publicly renounced her association with the Obidient movement and claimed she was never a Labour Party member.

Recalling past events, the party noted that Engr. Emetu had led the Abia State executive and members of the State House of Assembly to the party’s Nnewi National Convention in March 2024, where the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee was elected, and had personally endorsed Abure as the party’s national chairman.

The statement also alleged a renewed plot by a “powerful politician from the South East” to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling on Nigerians to resist any attempt to turn the Labour Party into a personal fiefdom.

The party reiterated that it had moved on from internal disputes and was focused on strengthening its structure nationwide and making greater electoral impact in 2027.
