Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has warned motorists and thrill-seekers that the FCT Administration will take decisive action against organised and reckless car racing in residential neighbourhoods across Abuja, saying the practice endangers lives and undermines public safety.
Speaking with journalists during a routine project inspection on Monday, Wike acknowledged praise for the newly constructed, smooth road networks in the capital territory but said those improvements must not be turned into racing tracks.
“First of all, they are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, but then they forget there are aspects of it that also pose danger to innocent citizens,” he said. “I appeal to them to understand that their rights have limitations, and life is more important.”
Wike said the administration had not yet received a formal written petition pinpointing specific locations of organised races, but he assured residents that action would be taken through internal enforcement channels. He said the FCT Traffic Management section would be engaged to ensure compliance.

“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to see that we don’t allow car racing within residential areas,” Wike said, adding a caveat about non-residential roads. “But if it is on the highway, well, that we will not stop.”
The minister stressed that motorsport activities should be limited to designated tracks or approved non-residential areas and emphasised that civic rights end where public safety is compromised.
The FCT Administration said it will coordinate with law enforcement and traffic regulatory bodies in the coming days to increase patrols and monitor identified high-risk zones in residential districts, a move aimed at preventing further incidents and protecting residents.
