Abubakar Dantsoho: Reform-driven CEO

Dantsoho

In the complex world of maritime trade, few public sector leaders have risen through the ranks with the depth of experience and institutional knowledge that define Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho.

As the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dantsoho stands at the forefront of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s ports, improve trade efficiency, and position the country as a leading maritime hub in Africa.

Appointed in July 2024, his elevation to the top position at the NPA was widely viewed as the culmination of a distinguished career spanning more than three decades within the organisation. Unlike many public sector chief executives, his journey is a classic story of dedication and professional growth, having joined the NPA as a National Youth Service Corps member in 1992 before being retained as a marketing officer. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks through a series of operational, commercial, and management positions.

Born on March 26, 1969, in Jalingo, Taraba State, Dantsoho possesses a strong academic foundation that has shaped his career in maritime administration. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Maiduguri in 1992 before obtaining a Master’s degree in International Transport from Cardiff University, Wales. Driven by a passion for research and innovation, he later completed a doctorate in Maritime Technology at Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom, where his research focused on safety management in marine operations.

Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation as a seasoned maritime technocrat with extensive expertise in port operations, commercial management, transport policy, and infrastructure development. His professional journey includes service as Principal Manager, Tariff and Billing; Technical Assistant to the Managing Director; Assistant General Manager; and Port Manager of Onne Port Complex, one of Nigeria’s busiest gateways for oil and gas logistics. At Onne Port, he spearheaded investor-friendly initiatives that significantly enhanced operational performance and cargo throughput.

Before his appointment as NPA Managing Director, he served as Chief of Staff to the Minister of Transportation, where he played a key role in policy coordination and sectoral reforms. His broad experience across both operational and policy levels equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities within Nigeria’s maritime ecosystem.

Since assuming office, Dantsoho has championed an ambitious agenda focused on port modernisation, digital transformation, infrastructure renewal, and enhanced competitiveness. His vision is to transform Nigeria’s ports into world-class facilities capable of attracting greater trade volumes, reducing cargo clearance delays, and strengthening the nation’s position in regional and global commerce. He has consistently advocated for smarter logistics systems, improved stakeholder collaboration, and greater efficiency across port operations.

His leadership has also earned international recognition. In 2025, Dantsoho was elected Vice-President for Africa of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), while also becoming the first Nigerian to serve as Chairman of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), milestones that underscore his growing influence within the global maritime.

Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho represents a new generation of public sector leadership, technically grounded, reform-driven, and globally minded.

His rise from corps member to managing director is not only a testament to personal excellence but also a reflection of what sustained commitment and professional competence can achieve. As Nigeria seeks to unlock the full potential of its maritime economy, Dantsoho remains one of the key figures shaping the future of the nation’s ports and trade infrastructure.

For these, he is winner of the Public Service Personality Award 2026.
