The Abia State Police Command has said armed men caught on video shooting along Absu Extension, Umuahia are not members of the Anti-Cultism Unit as the unit has since been disbanded.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Maureen Chinaka stated this in a statement shared on X on Tuesday.

A video which went viral on social media shows some armed men shooting sporadically on the road, spreading panic among residents and motorists.

Chinaka said investigation has commenced and the police have visited the scene of the incident but the identity of the shooters have not been ascertained.

She added that statements have been taken from residents of the area and victims of the incident have been identified and their statements have also been recorded.

Chinaka said, “The unidentified armed men are not officers of the Anti-Cultism Unit, as the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Abia State Police Command has been disbanded. Its officers have been redeployed and are currently on standby at the Command Headquarters.

“We are yet to ascertain the identity of the armed men, as the inscription on their outfits does not indicate any unique identification of the Anti-Cultism Unit.

“Various tactical teams have been summoned, and the victims of the incident have not identified any officer as being part of the incident.

“Hence, investigations are ongoing to determine their identity.”

Chinaka said Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) covering the location have been alerted to supervise the area and apprehend any unidentified armed men.

The police spokesperson urged the public to remain security-conscious and contact the police hotline whenever such incidents occur.
