Traders at the Umuehilegbu section of the Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State, took to the streets to protest the government’s appointment of new leadership for the market.
The Abia State Government announced on Saturday morning changes to the leadership of all markets in the state.
Reports from the city said the announcement sparked protests at the Umuehilegbu Industrial Market, where traders rejected the new leadership.
In rejecting the new leadership, the traders reportedly accused them of being staunch members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The protesting traders also accused the new appointees of being former executives who served under the administration of ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
The traders claimed that members of the new executive were individuals who actively opposed Dr Alex Otti during the 2023 general elections.
Some of the traders who spoke to newsmen wondered why the same executive that had been in charge of the market for so long, and never supported the governor during the election, would now be appointed to head the market.
They appealed to Governor Otti to intervene and reverse the appointment.
