Abia police command have arrested 32 suspects, including a lady for possession of suspected illicit drugs and another suspect for vandalizing and stealing government property.
A statement from the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka said leveraging on available information, operatives of the Central Police Station, (CPS), Umuahia in collaboration with community vigilantes, carried out coordinated raids on identified black spots within the Mission Hill/New Road axis, in an area popularly known as “Down Below.”
Another criminal hideout at Amuzukwu, known for drug bunkering and a refuge for criminals, was also successfully raided.
During the operations, according to the statement, a total of 30 male suspects and 1 female suspect were apprehended, while various substances suspected to be illicit drugs were recovered.
Following the raid, several huts and makeshift camps used as safe havens by criminals for concealment and sale of illicit drugs were destroyed.
Police said all the suspects have been charged to court and remanded at the correctional service.
Meanwhile, the command have arrested one Chigozirim Elem, male, 25 years, of Amasiri, Afikpo North LGA, Ebonyi State, but resident in Ugwunchara, Umuahia North LGA, Abia State, for allegedly vandalizing and stealing government property.
The suspect was said to have unlawfully gained access into four (4) unallocated shops at Ubani Government Market, Umuahia and maliciously damaged and vandalized the shops and stole four (4) double doors and one (1) single iron door.
The suspect was said to have on sighting security operatives, attempted to flee but was apprehended.
The stolen items including four double doors and one single iron door were recovered, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation after which the suspect will be charged to court.
