As the preparation for the interment of the iconic evangelist, Dr. Uma Ukpai gears up, former President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Chief Lekwa Ezutah, has implored the Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti to open up other alternate roads to Asaga Ohafia, the home of the revered man of God.

According to the foremost town planner, the single lane carriageway connecting Asaga to the outside world does not have the capacity to accommodate the anticipated volume of traffic given the global status of Dr. Ukpai.

He noted that traffic management will therefore, be a big challenge during the event, adding: “We can only talk of measures to ameliorate the challenge.

“Even though the burial date is Saturday, March 28, I would have recommended that attention be paid to the following alternative routes: Asaga-Amuke-Amangwu-Amaekpu Road; Asaga-Ebem-Akanu Road (the late Dr. Ukpai Agwu Ukpai commenced work on this route), and Asaga-Nde Orieke-Abia-Akanu route.”

He also recommended that the government carry out palliative repair works on the Asaga Road and on the major roads within Asaga.

Ezutah further recommended that an effective traffic control by traffic management agencies led by the Federal Road Safety Corps should be fully deployed to restrict vehicular movement in and out of Asaga, especially near the venue of the funeral, emphasising that: “There should be an organised shuttle bus service between Isiama and Asaga with high capacity buses, and the establishment of multiple parking lots with adequate security.”

He emphasised the need for an Ohafia ring road to link up the 26 villages so as to improve accessibility and thereby open up Ohafia, which will also prevent traffic bottlenecks during the festive periods, especially for Asaga and Isiugwu.
