The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 governorship aspirant, Mayor Igbokwe, has met with the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP),  JuliusAbure, sparking rumours of his defection to the LP and the possibility of picking the  party’s flag for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

Dr. Alex Otti is currently the Abia State Governor on the platform of the Labour Party. A statement after the closed-door meeting indicated that Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu, may soon join Abure-led faction of the Labour Party.

According to the statement, those present at the meeting with Abure included the Labour Party’s Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Chief CeekayIgara, and former member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. KelechiOnwuzuruike.

A close source described the meeting as an indication that Abure-led faction of LP might be considering giving Igbokwe the nod to run for the post of governor of Abia State on the platform of Labour Party as the crisis in the party lingers.

Mayor Igbokwe, who came second in the 2023 PDP governorship primaries in Abia, has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political as well as social space with the recent launch of two radio stations that attracted the presence of Nigeria’s Pop music artist, David Adeleke (Davido).

His meeting with the top hierarchy of the Labour  Party is being interpreted by observers as a potential move to switch political allegiance.
