The Abia State Government said it had concluded arrangements to host the 2026 edition of World Igbo Day. This comes as the state has begun a three-day Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Programme.
Announcing this in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Kanu, said World Igbo Day would run from September 28 to 29.
He said the event would provide a platform for Ndigbo to come together and reflect on their unity of purpose, shared identity and contributions to the development of Alaigbo.
According to him, the event, whose theme is “Njikọ Aka”, has activities lined up that include: a keynote lecture titled “Igbo Charter and the Development of Alaigbo”, the laying of wreaths in honour of fallen Igbo heroes and heroines, an interdenominational church service, a march-past by participating state delegations, traditional dances, as well as speeches by South-East governors and notable Igbo leaders expected at the event.

Meanwhile, the state has commenced the Abia State Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Programme.
Kanu said the three-day fasting and prayer programme, which began on Monday, September 21, would be rounded off on Wednesday, September 23.
He said participants were observing the daily fast from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., adding that the programme would climax with a solemn assembly and covenant renewal service scheduled for Thursday, September 24.
