President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, warned that ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies who abandon their duty posts for electioneering risk sanctions.
He spoke at the closing ceremony of the 2022 ministerial performance review retreat, saying with the commencement of campaigns towards the 2023 general elections, the business of governance must continue to receive the needed attention during this period by public servants and government appointees.
“Consequently, all ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies must remain focused in the discharge of their duties, as any infraction will be viewed seriously. Our collective goal is to map out a transition plan for the incoming administration to ensure proper documentation of all the policies, programmes and projects of government with up-to-date status of implementation,” he said.
At the event, the president also signed Executive Order 012 on Improving Performance Management, Coordination and Implementation of Presidential Priorities.
He said lessons discovered while implementing the administration’s policies, programmes and projects over the previous three years would act as catalyst for each ministry to continue its dedication to the accomplishment of developmental goals.
He issued a directive to all ministers, permanent secretaries, and heads of government organisations to step up, double their efforts, and collaborate in order to fully achieve the administration’s goals.
On Executive Order 12, the president explained that it would institutionalise a culture of accountability and transparency in the pursuit of good governance.
The president instructed Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, to carry out the process of quarterly reviews and assessments of ministries for the third and fourth quarters of 2022. He said the reports would be included in transitional materials from his administration to the succeeding administration.
To facilitate this, the president gave orders to all ministers and permanent secretaries to make sure the Central Delivery Coordination Unit reviews the performance reports of their ministries on a quarterly basis and submits thOn electricity, Buhari directed that all hands must be on deck to ensure timely realisation of the increase in electricity generation to 25,000 Megawatts in six years.
Buhari thanked former Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, who was keynote speaker for sharing his wealth of experience during his tenure in office with participants.
