Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former Head of State, on Wednesday emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State.
His candidacy was formally affirmed by party stakeholders from across the state during a stakeholders meeting at Nima Guest Palace in Kano on Wednesday evening.
Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, which was witnessed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Kano State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bello Gambo Bichi, explained that the affirmation of a new candidate became imperative following the resignation of the previously elected candidate, Mohammed Bello Dalhatu.
He explained that following consultations among party stakeholders in Kano and at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, Mohammed Sani Abacha was selected and affirmed as the gubernatorial flag-bearer of the party in the state.
“The affirmation began at the ward level, at the local government level and by all the relevant leadership structures of our great party,” he declared.
The Chairman explained that the affirmation was in line with the provisions of the law, recalling that the Electoral Act provides for replacement by affirmation in the event of the withdrawal of a party’s candidate before the election.

It will be recalled that Abacha had contested in the last three general elections for governor of Kano State.
Daily Sun gathered that alongside Abacha’s affirmation was that of his running mate, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, and some members of the state and National Assembly.
It was gathered that Kibiya was selected from the rival faction of the PDP, a move which party stakeholders said was intended to unify the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party Chairman stressed that with the emergence of the new governorship candidate and his running mate, the party has been energised to defeat its rivals in the 2027 general elections.
