Akwa Ibom state governor pastor Umo Eno has urged Nigerian leaders to embrace people centred governance at all levels to encourage citizens welfare and inclusive governance as a priority to drive democracy and pathway to address Nigeria’s socio- economic challenges.
According to the Commissioner of Information Hon Aniekan Umanah, Eno made the call while delivering a keynote address as Special Guest at the Centenary Anniversary Celebration of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos on the theme “Democracy and the Imperative of Good Governance : Renewing Hope in Challenging Times ” noting that true success of democracy is measured by the extent to which it improves the lives of citizens through practical policies, economic opportunities and improved standards of living.
He said governor Eno emphasized that leadership must go beyond political promises to delivering tangible socio-economic benefits while rebuilding citizens’ confidence in public institutions through transparency, accountability and responsible governance.
Umanah said the governor used the lecture to highlight development strides of his administration adding that state Government’s ARISE Agenda was designed as a people-focused blueprint aimed at transforming lives through agriculture, rural infrastructure development, human capital empowerment and enhanced security.
” Sustainable development requires a deliberate commitment to policies that place citizens at the centre of governance, particularly in addressing poverty and creating opportunities for economic advancement
“There is need for systemic renewal across the country. Effective leadership must be supported by strong institutions, integrity in public service and collaboration beyond political affiliations” .
Umanah explained that governor Eno urged political leaders to rise above regional and partisan interests and advocated for a governance approach driven by compassion, fairness and a commitment to serving humanity.

Umanah disclosed that the lecture formed part of the Yoruba Tennis Club’s year-long centenary celebration with the theme “A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition,” which attracted dignitaries including Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel
Umanah said Lagos state governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Yoruba Tennis Club for its remarkable contribution to national conversations and for sustaining its legacy as a platform for civic engagement and intellectual discourse since its establishment in 1926.
He said the Chairman of the Club’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, (SAN) and Chairman of the Club, Olawunmi Gasper in their contributions noted that the lecture series was part of the club’s tradition of promoting dialogue on issues affecting Nigeria’s growth and development.
He said the General Secretary of the club, Lookman Kotun explained that the centenary seminar provides an avenue to reflect on Nigeria’s past, examine present realities and explore solutions for the country’s democratic future.
“The Yoruba Tennis Club, founded in 1926, remains one of West Africa’s oldest and most influential social institutions, with a long-standing history of contributing to Nigeria’s cultural, intellectual and civic development”.
