A total of 250 elderly persons in Akwa Ibom state have received N200,000 each from the wife of President Bola Tinubu as Christmas largess in the third edition of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) under Social Investment Programme of the present administration in Nigeria.

Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital during the disbursement of cash to beneficiaries at Government House, Mrs Tinubu stated that the social investment programme is the ongoing effort of the present administration to ensure that elderly citizens live with dignity and happiness.

“This social investment programme embodies our ongoing effort to ensure that our elderly citizens live with dignity and joy, in a nation that genuinely cares for its own.

“Since the inception of this administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has made it a tradition to celebrate our senior citizens every December, in recognition of their invaluable contributions to nation-building. Through this scheme, we have continued to express our gratitude and care for the men and women who have laboured to build the Nigeria we are all proud to be part of today”.

Oluremi Tinubu who was speaking through the Coordinator of the Office of the Wife of governor of Akwa Ibom state Mrs Helen Eno Obareki on the theme ” Finding Joy in Old Age” said the scheme has supported 250 vulnerable elderly
citizens 65 years and above in all the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory.

She said other beneficiaries are veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) adding that each state received N50m each for the exercise.

“These nine thousand five hundred (9500) selected beneficiaries will receive Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) each.

“The total sum to be disbursed is One Billion Nine Hundred Million Naira (N1,900,000,000) as approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

“Each state of the federation will receive the sum of Fifty Million Naira (N50,000,000), including FCT and DEPOWA.

“As we approach the festive season, it is crucial to emphasise the importance of prioritising our elderly citizens in our initiatives.

” They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generations may have smoother roads to travel”.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu explained that it was moral responsibility of government to ensure that the aged persons live in comfort and joy to achieve graceful living.

“It is therefore our moral duty, and indeed our joy, to ensure that they live their twilight years in comfort, good health, and dignity.”

She therefore charged beneficiaries to live joyfully in their old age while exhibiting compassion and care .

“My advice to our senior citizens is to do all that is possible to find joy in old age. Let us also find purpose in community, compassion, and care. Remember that ageing gracefully is not just about longevity but about being surrounded by love, support, and respect.

“I encourage you to continue playing your part by staying healthy and active.

” Nurture both your body and mind through regular exercise and meaningful engagement. Those of us who are active should continue to engage in charitable work and, in so doing, find joy in helping others”.

Beneficiaries received instant cash alert at the venue of the ceremony and thanked Mrs Tinubu for her compassion.

One of the beneficiaries Mr Abasiana Akpabio appreciated Mrs Oluremi Tinubu for her generosity and wished her a Merry Christmas and prosperous new year .

“I thank our First Lady for showing us joy in the spirit of the yuletide and pray God to bless her more ”
