In a commando-like style, gunmen attacked the Delta State Government House, yesterday and left one dead.
The attackers suspected to be armed robbers reportedly arrived Government House Annexe, Warri, when members of the state Waterways Security Committee were holding a meeting.
The attack which occurred at about 11am, caused chaos in the area as security agents attached to the Annex scampered for safety amid gunshots.
Investigation revealed that the gunmen trailed the late driver who was said to be carrying a large amount of money meant for the officials of the Waterways Committee.
Despite the gun shots, the driver drove into the premises of the Annex with bullet wounds and later died before he could be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A source disclosed in the condition of anonymity that the money with the driver was withdrawn from one of the new generation banks in the city.
Charles Aniagwu, the chief press secretary to the Delta government, who confirmed the attack said: “It was a group of armed robbers who were chasing a driver from the Government House Annex that went to the bank.
“They pursued him as he was driving back. He rammed into the Government House gates and ran out of the car.
“They started shooting at the vehicle. Unfortunately, we lost him and I heard they have apprehended three of the suspects.”
