The Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, which corresponds with the 1st of Muharram, 1447 AH, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the new Islamic year.
The state governor Ahmed Aliyu said that the holiday is intended to allow the Muslim Ummah in the state to celebrate the commencement of the 1447 Islamic (Hijra) calendar year in peace and spiritual reflection.
In a goodwill message to mark the occasion, Aliyu urged residents to use the new Islamic year as an opportunity to renew their faith and commitment to Almighty Allah.
“We should use the beginning of this new Islamic calendar year for sober reflection and self-assessment, to recognize where we have done well and strive for improvement, and where we have fallen short, to make amends,
He emphasized the spiritual and moral importance of the Islamic New Year, urging the faithful to embrace its lessons and values for personal and communal growth.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting Islamic teachings and values throughout the state.
The governor concluded by wishing the entire Muslim Ummah a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
