Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, witnessed a historic moment on Friday as it officially inaugurated a new Management Council, signaling the return to democratic governance after a turbulent period marked by internal disputes and ad-hoc leadership.

The well-attended ceremony was chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Aare Kola Oyefeso, and featured vibrant entertainment by the Luli Band and a captivating performance from legendary juju musician, Sir Shina Peters.

The newly constituted council is led by Seyi Adewunmi as President. Other members of the executive include Engr. Tunji Amosu (Vice President), Toyin Deinde (Secretary-General), Otunba Abimbola Olaniyi (Treasurer), Francis Ofordu (Membership Secretary), Vincent Olasogba (Sports Secretary), Ose Lato (Social Secretary), and Arc. Tokunbo Ashiru as Committee Member.

In his inaugural address, President Adewunmi struck a solemn yet hopeful tone. He began by acknowledging the challenges the club had faced over the past year and a half and extended an unreserved apology to all members. “Today, I have to initiate reconciliation because I am becoming an elder myself. As a student, reconciliation was a burden, but as President, it has become a duty and responsibility,” he said. Adewunmi took responsibility for past disruptions during his previous tenure from June 2023 to August 2024, and expressed deep regret for the breakdown of constitutional order.

He further extended a peace offering to all members, inviting them to come together and rebuild what he referred to as “our very own family club.” His speech highlighted the importance of unity and mutual respect, noting that the strength of Lagos Country Club lies in its ability to network, connect, and thrive through shared values.

Adewunmi expressed his profound gratitude to key individuals who kept the club afloat during its crisis. He praised the dedication of the rescue team led by Chief O. Ogunmekan and acknowledged numerous elders who, during the crisis, “planted trees under whose shade they may never sit.” These members, he said, held meetings, offered counsel, and mediated silently yet effectively to restore peace and progress.

He also commended sectional chairmen for maintaining the fabric of the club’s networking and social activities, as well as the registered trustees for their steadfast commitment. Turning to the newly inaugurated council, Adewunmi emphasized the weight of their responsibility. “Our members have been patient and deserve only the best. I will accept no excuses on behalf of this council. We must operate on high moral ground and deliver exceptional services.”

Aare Kola Oyefeso, in his own remarks, echoed the theme of reconciliation and responsibility. He applauded the return to an elected management and called on all members to rally behind the new leadership. “There can only be one captain of a ship, and at this moment, it is Mr. Seyi Adewunmi. We must support him wholeheartedly,” he urged.

With the inauguration of its 26th Management Council, Lagos Country Club Ikeja enters a new chapter, one marked by hope, healing, and a renewed commitment to excellence in service.
