The Zamfara State government has launched initiatives to reduce maternal and newborn mortality across its general hospitals and healthcare centres.
Health Commissioner Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun announced these measures during a health sector review meeting at the JB Yakubu Secretariat in Gusau.
The government aims to improve access to quality healthcare for women and children. Governor Dauda Lawal’s declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector underscores his commitment to its overhaul.
Dr Maradun, represented by Permanent Secretary Malan Bashiru Surajo Gusau, outlined efforts to renovate and equip health centres to meet state and international standards. Hospitals and clinics are receiving new medical tools and modern equipment, reflecting a dedication to lowering childbirth risks.
The initiatives, according to Dr Maradun, combined with increased staff dedication and teamwork, will significantly reduce maternal and newborn deaths across Zamfara’s 14 local government areas. Representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) attended the meeting.
