From Jude Chinedu, Enugu

The Isiagu Akpawfu community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, has formally refuted claims of unrest and thrown its full support behind the newly emerged traditional ruler, Igwe Tony Okoye.

The community leaders described a report in the media, with the headline, “Tension mounts in Enugu community over Igweship tussle”, as concocted lies intended to fuel division and undermine the rightful monarch.

The statement was jointly signed by Anthony Nnamani, Secretary General, Isiagu Akpawfu Town Union, Dr. Pius Nnamani, Chairman, Uwani Isiagu Village, Ozor Anaekpere Anioko, Chairman, Aguisienu Village, Goddy Edeani, Chairman, Isienu/Ogologbo Village and Ifeanyi Nnamani, Chairman, Uzomani Village.

“We are constrained to refute this falsehood in order not to glorify the mischief makers who are bent on causing disaffection and misleading the people. These claims are frivolous and baseless and should be disregarded by all,” the statement reads.

The leaders emphasised that Isiagu Akpawfu is peaceful and united and is celebrating the formal presentation of Prince Okoye, its first Igwe in nineteen years, with joy and glamour.

They also praised Governor Peter Mbah for ongoing development projects across Isiagu and the wider Akpawfu Kingdom.

Detailing the selection process, the leaders noted that a December 2018 screening committee disqualified James Ogbu on the grounds that his kindred is not indigenous to Isiagu Akpawfu.

“Sequel to his disqualification, the disgruntled Ogbu colluded with the late Town Union President General, Samuel Anigbo, to thwart the process, an action that led to litigation,” the leaders explained.

In Suit No. E/666/2019, heard by Justice C. O. Ajah, PhD, Ogbu admitted under oath that his family does not hail from Isiagu Akpawfu.

The court’s November 29, 2024, declaratory judgment upheld the committee’s report and affirmed Prince Okoye as the only qualified candidate. “This ruling has been embraced by the Town Union, the state government, and all relevant authorities,” the statement affirmed.

To cement unity, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs convened stakeholders on April 7, 2025, attended by Commissioner, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, ministry representatives, Town Union executives, village leaders, and the contestants themselves.

They added that on April 26, 2025, a colorful presentation ceremony saw Prince Okoye receive his Certificate of Return amid widespread community support.

“We urge the good people of Isiagu Akpawfu, and the general public, to ignore these distractions and continue to stand firmly behind our Igwe,” the statement concluded.
