The Nigerian Navy Officers Wives Association (NOWA), Saturday held a fitness health walk program for wives of officers and ratings of the service to boost their mental and physical health.
The event which took place at the Naval unit parade ground Abuja, is also aimed at raising awareness, build community, and promote a culture where movement is part of everyday life.
In her address at the occasion, NOWA president, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogalla, who commended the women for turning out in their large number, said it goes a long way to show to prioritize their health and embrace an active lifestyle.
Represented by her deputy, Mrs Zainab Bassey, the NOWA president while noting that Walking is one of the simplest but yet most powerful forms of physical activity, said It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, supports joint health, reduces stress, and boosts mood.
She said studies have showed that just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
“But this walk isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about holistic well-being. Let’s walk together-not just for ourselves, but for the message we send: that health is a priority. “Regular walking supports mental health, improves sleep, and helps manage anxiety and depression.
She said “Today, we are walking for our health-but also to raise awareness, build community, and promote a culture where movement is part of everyday life.
“As we all gathered here today for this fitness health walk, I am assuring you that your presence matters to us. It sets an example and shows that small and consistent steps can lead to long-term change.
“We walk today not only for physical fitness, but for mental clarity, stress relief, and connection with our environment, with our neighbors, and with ourselves. Let today be a reminder that even simple steps can lead to lasting change.
She commended the women for being part of the walk, she described fitness health walk as one of the best ways to stay active without needing special equipment or a gym membership and urged them to walk.
