President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at age 74.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu offered condolences to Chukwu’s family, friends, and the football community, calling him a towering figure whose contributions raised Nigeria’s global football status.

Nicknamed “Chairman” for his commanding presence, Chukwu captained Nigeria’s Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and later coached the Super Eagles to a bronze medal in 2004. His club career with Enugu Rangers shone brightly, securing multiple national titles and the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.

Tinubu lauded Chukwu’s legacy of passion and patriotism. “Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach; he was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” he said. “His legacies will live on in the trophies he won and the lives he touched.”

The President prayed for comfort for Chukwu’s family, urging them to find solace in his enduring legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest sportsmen. The football community continues to mourn an icon whose impact will endure.
