Sokoto State has successfully hosted the first revival edition of the Game of Five Tournament, also known as Sardauna’s Game, with the goal of promoting unity among states and reviving sport in the region.
The Game of Five, which was first played in Nigeria in 1928 in Kebbi State, is a variant of handball or a wall game, played with a ball using hands.
The game holds significant historical importance in Sokoto, with the Sultan of Sokoto being a permanent player.
Speaking at the interstate Five National Unity Championship at Mai Gero Theatre, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Mustapha Mohammed, pledged full support for the revival of the game, recognising its potential to bring people together and create opportunities for young talent.
Mohammed stated that the government is committed to supporting sporting activities that unify the youth, including this revived edition of the Game of Five.
“Sokoto’s recent hosting of the first-ever National Unity Interstate Five Championship after nearly three decades marks another milestone in the state’s sports development.”
Also speaking, the National President of the Five Federation of Nigeria (FFN), Alhaji Abubakar Dan Galadima, said that the game has a rich legacy in Sokoto, noting that its fundamental objective is to foster unity and apprenticeship among players.
He said that the decision to host the tournament in Sokoto was driven by the state’s previous absence from national events, aiming to reignite participation in national competitions.
In his address, the FFN Chairman in Sokoto, Mai Akwai Mu’azu Lamido, said the event promises to showcase exceptional talent, skills, and sportsmanship.
He appreciated the efforts of different stakeholders who made the event possible.
