An Official in the employment of the Kaduna State Government has said 90 persons have so far died of COVID-19 since the state joined the emergency campaign in March 2020 and vaccination in March 2021.

Speaking at the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention/ MasterCard Foundation “Saving Lives and Livelihood Initiative” sensitization engagement meeting in Kaduna, Health Educator, Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, Mr. Isah Yushau said, 268, 955 individuals were tested out of which 11,657 came out positive as at the first week of February.

According to Isah, the Kaduna State Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) COVID-19 vaccination campaign report as of February 15, 2023, revealed that the State has been able to vaccinate more than the recommended 70 percent of Nigerians residing in the State.

To him, though the virus appears to have reduced drastically due to the number of residents that have been vaccinated and awareness campaigns by government agencies and development partners, urging those who are yet to take the vaccine to go for it in public and private facilities across the state.

He also added that with the support of the Global Fund, the State distributed 5 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets and customised anti-malaria drugs to Kaduna residents in 2022.

“We appreciate how you have been working closely with the State government to promote the well-being of our people.

“We are hoping that this meeting will be another opportunity to see how we can collectively move Kaduna State forward in such a way that we can say COVID-19 is gone in our state”, he told the organisers and partners.

Earlier, Executive Branch Secretary of Nigerian Red Cross, Kaduna State branch, Mr. Sunday Awulu reminded the meeting that the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in partnership with the MasterCard
Foundation commenced the implementation of the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative in Nigeria to
accelerate the COVID-19 vaccination.

*Through this partnership, the Federal Government has launched its mass vaccination campaign, ‘SCALES 3.0″ to ensure that at least 65-70 percent of its population is vaccinated in line with the World Health Organisation”s recommendation at the eve of the pandemic”, he said.

There were goodwill messages from the representatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Refugee Commission (NRC) among other participants at the meeting held at Kukah Centre, Abakpa, Kaduna.
