No fewer than nine people were killed in fresh attack on Wereng Camp community in Riyom LGA of Plateau State.

Several people were also injured and many houses razed to ashes in the incident on Wednesday night.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen struck at precisely 9pm when most of the people in the community had gone to bed.

National president Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Barrister Solomon Dalyop, stated that the gunmen, who had laid siege on the community, started shooting into the air to announce their arrival, forcing residents to flee in different directions for safety.

Dalyop disclosed that no fewer than nine persons were killed and virtually all the houses in the community were razed.

According to him, the residents were forced to flee when the gunmen began firing into the air: “The attackers who were in large numbers attacked victims from house to house, while also setting fire to their homes. Some of the inhabitants mustered the bravery to defend their community, but we’re overwhelmed by the attackers’ superior firepower.

“The onslaught lasted for more than two hours and at the end nine individual were slain, largely children and the aged. Almost all the houses in the community were torched by the marauders before they went, while foodstuffs were also carted away.”

Efforts to get the statement of the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful, as his phone could not be reached when our correspondent tried to get in touch with him.
