Ahead of this year’s Independence Day celebration on 1 October, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr Olusola Odumosu, has deployed over 3,000 personnel across the length and breadth of the FCT.
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the FCT Command, Monica Ojobi, said this was to enforce law and order as well as ensure a peaceful celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
She said the deployment was sequel to the need to ensure the security of lives and property of FCT residents as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) in the FCT and its environs before, during and after the Independence anniversary.
The deployment of officers and men cuts across specialised departments and units of the corps: the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) and Counter-Terrorism Unit.
In addition, there is a massive deployment to volatile areas and soft targets such as shopping malls, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, amusement parks and areas housing CNAI.
“In a move to ensure proactiveness and prevent emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, men of our undercover unit have already been deployed for covert operations and surveillance.
“Black spots like uncompleted buildings that harbour criminals are also covered to avert security breaches.”
The statement noted that Odumosu also gave marching orders to all area commanders and divisional officers to ensure their various area councils are on top of their game and that their presence is felt to avoid security hitches.

“As usual, I will not tolerate any form of security breach. All hands must be on deck. Ensure your personnel comply wholly,” he warned.
The FCT helmsman charged all personnel to be disciplined and of good conduct as well as work in synergy with other security agencies for the sole purpose of securing lives, property and government’s critical national assets and infrastructure.
He accordingly admonished them to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement: avoid harassment and intimidation of any citizen and avoid accidental discharge.
The commandant assured residents of the FCT of a safe celebration by ensuring a secure environment before, during and after the Independence anniversary.
Odumosu also encouraged residents of the FCT to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement, individual or group to any security agency near them.
“We are ready to ensure the celebration is peaceful. You have a responsibility to carry out. You must be proactive, vigilant and ready to co-operate with us for our common good,” the commandant said.
He warned criminals and vandals to keep off CNAI, adding that NSCDC covert officers and patrol teams are all over the city and will not spare any offender the full weight of the law.
