5 Niger Delta summit delegates die in auto crash

Five delegates to the second national council meeting of the Niger Delta holding in Igbokoda in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State have died in an auto crash.

The delegates whose identities were not yet ascertained were travelling from Akure to Igbokoda for the summit which Vice President Yemi Osibajo is to chair. Four people also injured in the accident, which occurred at Ode-Aye, a sleepy town along Okitipupa-Igbokoda.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who confirmed the accident, said the accident was caused by excessive speeding.

He said three vehicles were involved in the accident and added that the vehicles were damaged beyond recognition.

The PPRO said the bodies have been deposited at the mogue of the state specialist hospital in Okitipupa, where the injured victims are also receiving treatment.

Meanwhile Vice President Osinbajo has arrived the International Events Centre, Akure for the summit.

The vice president, who was received at the Akure airport by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo in his palace.
