Five people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of two separate buildings in Kano metropolis, the Kano State Fire Service has said.
The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government and Kurna in Fagge Local Government of the state.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said the first incident occurred at an incomplete building near Salbas Filling Station in Gaida.
According to him, the building collapsed while six workers were on site.
The statement said four of the workers died in the incident, while two others were rescued alive.
The deceased were identified as Sunusi Surajo, Bashir Ibrahim, Ibrahim and Abubakar.
The second incident occurred at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School building in the Kurna area of Fagge LG, where nine students were trapped following the collapse of part of the structure.
The Fire Service said 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad died in the incident, while eight other students were rescued alive.
The rescued students were identified as Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah and Hadiza Haruna.
The statement added that the surviving victims were handed over to the school’s headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.
The Fire Service said the causes of the two separate incidents were still under investigation.
It urged building owners, contractors and workers to adhere strictly to approved building standards and safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent further incidents of building collapse.
The agency also advised those involved in construction to ensure that structures are properly supervised and built in accordance with safety regulations.
