5 corps members, 7 others escape death in Abuja auto crash

From Abubakar Yakubu, Abuja

Five corps members and seven other passengers of a commercial bus with registration number Lagos AAA 52XD, yesterday, escaped death when the bus lost control after a blown out tyre and somersaulted near the Niger military barracks, along the Kubwa-Aya Expressway, Abuja.

The corps members, who had just collected their discharge certificates from the NYSC Orientation Camp, Kubwa, boarded the bus at the camp’s junction and were heading towards Mararaba.

The incident attracted a  senior Naval officer who turned around his staff car as well as pilot vehicle to the accident scene and commanded his men to lay the four critically injured passengers at the back of the pilot vehicle, while others entered and were rushed to the hospital.

A passenger who escaped with minor injuries said the driver was on top speed when it lost a tyre and the vehicle began to swerve on the expressway, before it somersaulted.

He said the conductor was thrown off the bus and might have sustained a spinal cord injury while the driver and other passengers that sat in front suffered deep cuts on their head.
