Over 40,000 farmers under the aegis of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Abia State chapter, have endorsed and adopted the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kelechi Anosike, as their sole candidate for the February 6, 2027 governorship election in the state.

The adoption was announced by the State Chairman of AFAN, Barr. Mike Obinna Okezie, who led members of the state executive on a visit to Anosike at his campaign office on Aba Road, Umuahia.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Okezie said AFAN decided to identify with Anosike because of his welfare programmes and agricultural agenda, describing him as “not a run-of-the-mill politician.”

He said farmers had laboured for years without adequate recognition and saw in Anosike’s blueprint a renewed push for food security and agricultural development.

According to him, the association was particularly attracted by Anosike’s proposed Operation Feed Abia, which includes strengthened agricultural extension services, mechanisation, grants to farmers, revival of farm settlements and improvement of rural roads.

Okezie said AFAN would mobilise its members across the 17 local government areas and 184 wards of the state in support of the PDP candidate.

Responding, Anosike thanked the farmers for the endorsement and assured them that agriculture would occupy a strategic place in his administration if elected.

He said his administration would work directly with farmers through extension workers, improved access to tractors and other farm machinery, grants and measures to standardise agricultural produce for export.

Anosike also promised to revitalise abandoned farm settlements and improve rural roads to ease the movement of produce from farms to markets.

He said his campaign had already approved the creation of a Directorate of Farmers to ensure that farmers had direct representation and input in the campaign and, ultimately, in government.

The PDP candidate reiterated that the 2027 contest should be driven by competing programmes and policies rather than personal attacks.

“The 2027 election will be a referendum of ideas, not insults,” Anosike said.

PDP leaders at the meeting assured the farmers that they would have meaningful representation under an Anosike administration, including consideration of a practising farmer for the position of Commissioner for Agriculture.

The farmers pledged to take the campaign to their members across the state and mobilise support for Anosike at the polling units.
