4 killed, others missing in Jigawa boat mishap

Four passengers have been confirmed dead while several others  are still missing in a boat mishap that occurred in Zango Maja Town,Taura  Local Government (LG),Jigawa State.

A statement yesterday, by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria  Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa state, Badruddeen  Mahmud, said the mishap occurred on Sunday, July 27,2025.

According to Mahmud ,the ill-fated boat was conveying 17 passengers, mostly young girls,between the ages of 10 and 13 years, from Digawa Village in Jahun LG to Zangon Maje town in Taura LGA, when it capsized mid-way through the journey.

The statement further indicated that preliminary reports, confirmed that out of the 17 passengers on board, seven  were rescued alive, four  bodies have been recovered, while five  persons remain missing as of the time of this release.

“Of the 17 passengers, 16 were female, highlighting the devastating impact of this incident on young lives and families.

“Rescue efforts, led by the NSCDC in collaboration with local divers, and community volunteers, immediately and are still ongoing in a bid to locate the missing individuals.,” the statement added.

The NSCDC explained that the cause of the boat mishap was yet unknown adding  however that that investigation was ongoing at the moment to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Command assures the public that necessary measures are being taken to avert future occurrences and ensure safety across the state’s waterways.

“The State Commandant, NSCDC, Jigawa State Command, Commandant Bala Bawa Bodinga, expressed deep sympathy to the affected families and the communities of Digawa and Zangon Maje” the statement concluded.
