No fewer than four persons were feared dead and eight others injured in a ghastly motor accident in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The accident, which took place in the early hours of yesterday at the Immigration Junction, Agu-Awka along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, involved an articulated vehicle laden with fuel and a Mercedes Benz 608 bus loaded with yam tubers.

A witness said the tanker, which was coming from the Onitsha axis lost control, following a brake malfunction and rammed into the bus coming from the opposite direction.

“The truck ran into the bus because of the inability of the bus driver to speed off. I suspect that it developed some faults before it got there,” he said.

The lifeless body of one of the victims was still trapped in the vehicle when newsmen visited the scene yesterday morning, while operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Police, Fire Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were on ground, making frantic effort to remove the carnage and control traffic as well as ensure there was no explosion.
