The 3rd edition of the JGM U16 and U19 Boys & Girls Squash Championship has been described as a resounding success, drawing significant attention for its impressive organisation, high level of participation, and state-of-the-art facilities.

Held for the first time outside Ibadan, Oyo State, the championship was hosted in Ilorin, Kwara State — a centrally located venue that provided easy access for participants from across the country. The change in location brought a fresh sense of excitement among the young athletes, many of whom were thrilled to compete in a new environment according to the sponspor of the event Oyeniyi Oyewumi.

A total of 66 players and 10 coaches took part in the tournament. Although 85 entries were initially received from various states and squash academies, some players were unable to attend due to ongoing school examinations and financial constraints tied to the prevailing economic challenges.

Organisers attributed the high turnout to the modern squash facilities in Ilorin, as well as the comprehensive accommodation and feeding arrangements provided for all players and officials. All participants were housed near the venue, eliminating the need for daily travel and ensuring a focused tournament atmosphere. A reliable standby power supply further enhanced the experience for everyone involved.

“This year’s edition also stood out for the quality of prizes awarded. Winners received premium squash equipment aimed at boosting their development and performance,” Oyewumi stated. The success of the tournament has already sparked interest in future hosting rights. According to organisers, three states and two squash clubs have expressed interest in hosting the 2026 edition.

However, there is growing optimism that Kwara State may retain hosting rights due to its impressive facilities and successful delivery of this year’s event. One organiser even humorously suggested a call from the presidency to host the 2026 edition at Aso Rock, referencing the popular slogan “JGM Lo Kan.”

Reflecting on the broader impact, stakeholders emphasised the need for more grassroots and age-group squash tournaments across Nigeria. They noted that events like the JGM Championship are vital for identifying young talent and preparing them for national and international competitions.

With Nigerian players such as Onas, Kehinde, Gabriel, Rofiat, and the Olatunji sisters already making waves on the professional squash circuit, there is growing belief that the country can secure a slot in squash if it becomes a medal event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Organisers are now advocating for training tours to expose junior players to international competition and build on the momentum generated by the championship.
