The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, will confer national and higher diplomas on 8,139 graduating students at the 36th convocation ceremony for the 2022/2023 academic session.
The Rector of YABATECH, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, who was flanked by the acting Registrar, Dr. Emmanuel Akinwale, and the chairman of the Ceremonial Committee, Mrs. Olabisi Adeniyi, disclosed this at the pre-convocation briefing. He also revealed that 316 graduating students bagged Distinction in various courses at the ND and HND levels.
Abdul further announced that at the convocation ceremony, the college would confer Fellowships on the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Tajudeen Abbas.
The Rector also disclosed that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would deliver the convocation lecture on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, while His Excellency, the Vice-President, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, would chair the occasion.
He said Sanwo-Olu, who will speak on “Developing Exportable Alternatives for Nigeria’s Economic Recovery,” would bring his experience as the governor of the most prosperous state in Nigeria to bear on the topic.
His words: “Valuable ideas generated from this lecture will serve as the contributions of YABATECH to the economic diversification and recovery of President Bola Tinubu.
“There is no gainsaying the truism that Nigeria is currently economically challenged, but the President is putting the country on the trajectory of economic renaissance with his policies.

“Though the policies are coming with initial pains felt by both the rich and the poor, there is a very high hope and positive indicators that the President is getting it right and deserves the support of all of us.”
He noted: “This year, we are proud to announce that 8,139 students will be graduating from YABATECH. These graduates have demonstrated diligence and commitment to their studies, and we celebrate their success.”
According to him, 316 students will graduate with Distinction, 2,381 others obtained Upper Credit, 3,939 will graduate with Lower Credit, and 1,503 will receive diplomas with a pass grade.
He provided a breakdown of schools with Distinction as follows: Art – 10, Engineering – 92, Environmental – 13, Liberal – 14, Management Business Studies – 63, Science – 44, and Technology – 80.
On the Fellowship award, the Rector said that Tinubu and Abbas had not only made remarkable contributions to Nigeria but had also inspired generations with their leadership and vision.
“Their achievements in public service reflect the values of dedication, integrity, and excellence that we seek to instill in our students. We are proud to have them as part of the Yaba College of Technology family,” he stated.
Abdul listed his one-year administration achievements to include academic excellence and curriculum development, infrastructure and facilities improvement, digital transformation and e-learning, student welfare and engagement initiatives, staff development and recognition, and community engagement and social responsibility.
