Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, has urged Nigerians to remain patient with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, expressing confidence that the country will overcome its challenges.

He spoke as 300 residents of Ikeja Constituency II benefited from a two-day free eye care outreach organised to mark World Sight Day.

Kasunmu, who represents Ikeja Constituency II, gave the assurance in his remarks during the event held at his constituency office in Ikeja, Lagos, in collaboration with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The programme featured eye screenings and the distribution of 300 pairs of eyeglasses to beneficiaries under the theme, “Love and Care for Your Eyes.”

Speaking at the event, Kasunmu acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians were experiencing but appealed for patience and continued support for Tinubu’s administration.

He said the government’s efforts to address the country’s challenges would require time, commitment and the cooperation of citizens.

“We must make sure that one good turn deserves another. We must appreciate what he (Tinubu) has been doing so far. It has been very difficult to achieve, but I know that we will get to the Promised Land, he said.

“It has not been an easy task, but with the right formation, commitment and cooperation, we will get it done. Nigeria will be handed over to us as Nigerians, as a nation without stain.”

Kasunmu said the eye care outreach was part of his commitment to improving the welfare of constituents and promoting healthy living in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He explained that although his office had organised similar programmes since 2015, this edition was deliberately scheduled to coincide with World Sight Day to raise awareness about eye health and make professional services accessible to more residents.

“We intend to live up to the expectations of the people and also work in line with the SDGs, which promote healthy living. Sight is a major force to reckon with because, if you have sight, you have the ability to do quite a number of things,” he said.

Also speaking, a consultant ophthalmologist in LASUTH’s Ophthalmology Department, Dr Sedoten Bashorun, said World Sight Day was established to raise awareness about vision and encourage people to pay greater attention to their eye health.

She stressed the importance of regular eye examinations, noting that early detection and prevention could help reduce the risk of avoidable vision problems.

Bashorun said LASUTH had continued to take eye care services to different communities in Ikeja as part of efforts to bring healthcare closer to residents.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Williams Shola, commended the organisers, saying she had previously visited General Hospital Odofin to seek help for an eye problem.

She said she received eyeglasses and two medications after being examined by medical personnel during the outreach.

Shola explained that she had been experiencing excessive tearing, particularly when she woke up in the morning, and sought medical advice during the programme.

She advised Nigerians to obtain eyeglasses from qualified eye care professionals rather than buying them from roadside vendors, warning that inappropriate eyewear could worsen existing eye problems.

The outreach underscored the importance of community-based healthcare initiatives in improving access to professional eye examinations and supporting residents who might otherwise struggle to obtain essential eye care.
