Three persons have been arrested for indiscriminate dumping of refuse at Ladipo Junction, inward Airport Road, Lagos.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) disclosed this in a Monday statement signed by its Director, Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi.
According to LAWMA’s Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, the suspects were arrested following an intervention by the Ladipo Market Union on Thursday, October 29.
They were subsequently handed over to the Task Force Office in Oshodi for further action in line with environmental laws.
Adebiyi commended the market union for its proactive role, describing it as a demonstration of community responsibility and stakeholder collaboration in environmental management.
He said safeguarding the environment requires collective effort from market associations, residents, businesses and community leaders, adding that decisive action against offenders sends a clear message that indiscriminate waste disposal will not be tolerated.
He noted that illegal dumping defaces public spaces, obstructs drainage channels, degrades the environment and poses risks to public health.
He urged traders and members of the public to patronize approved waste collection services and dispose of refuse only through authorised channels, not on roads, medians and other public spaces.
LAWMA reiterated its commitment to working with market unions and other stakeholders across the state to strengthen environmental compliance and promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
