The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Desmond Amadin Enabulele, has applauded the organisers of the 2nd Niger Delta Games, Dunamis-Icon Limited, and sponsors, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for the extensive upgrade of sporting facilities across Benin City.
Enabulele gave the commendation at the end of a scheduled inspection tour of key venues for the Games. He led members of the Commission’s management team to assess facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, including the tennis courts, swimming pool and indoor sports hall, as well as the basketball and volleyball courts at the Wire Road Sports Centre.
Expressing satisfaction with the level of work completed, the Sports Commission boss disclosed that the upgrades were about 90 per cent complete.
“The facility upgrade is 90 per cent ready and we are very happy with what is on ground. The tennis court at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and the indoor halls are fully ready, while work on the swimming pool is ongoing at an advanced stage. We are ready,” Enabulele declared.
He described the renovation as one of the numerous benefits of Edo State hosting the Games.
Meanwhile, Enabulele officially declared Team Edo’s camp open on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin City, charging the athletes to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Addressing the contingent, he reminded them that they now represent the state as ambassadors and must uphold discipline and commitment throughout the camping period and the Games.
“We are not just participating; we are hosting to win. The responsibility to deliver and set new records rests on your shoulders. The state government has provided the necessary resources and welfare to support you. Discipline must be our watchword,” he said.
The Commission chairman also urged the athletes to improve on their performance at the maiden edition of the Games in Uyo, where Edo State recorded the highest number of silver and bronze medals.
“We must change the narrative this time. We had the highest number of silver and bronze medals in Uyo. Now, we must convert those to gold,” he charged.
Responding on behalf of the athletes, the head coach of the basketball team, Victor Umoru, commended the Commission for providing adequate welfare and quality facilities for both athletes and coaches.
The Team Edo camp opened on Sunday, February 8, ahead of the 2nd Niger Delta Games scheduled to hold from February 20 to 27 in Benin City.
