Twenty-five terrorists have been dispersed to the great beyond after troops of Operation Hadin Kai foiled an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) coordinated attack in Kukawa, Borno State.
The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Goni said the terrorists, in large numbers, launched a multi-directional assault from four flanks on troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion.
He said the troops responded decisively with superior firepower and tactical coordination, supported by the Air Component, overwhelming the terrorists and forcing survivors to flee.
“Preliminary assessment indicates that over 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far,” the statement said.
Troops recovered six AK-47 rifles and other ammunition during exploitation of the area, while operations are ongoing to track fleeing terrorists and prevent regrouping.
The military said some soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice during the encounter and commiserated with their families.
Goni said the successful counter-offensive demonstrates the combat readiness of troops in the North East and the effectiveness of air-ground synergy in denying terrorists freedom of action.
He added that troops would sustain aggressive patrols and intelligence-led operations with sister services to dismantle terrorist networks and protect communities.
