Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure under Nigeria’s rotational presidency arrangement.
Yari spoke on Monday at the palace of the Emir of Gwandu in Birnin Kebbi, where he and other members of the campaign council visited traditional rulers to pay homage and seek royal blessings ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
The APC campaign director-general aligned with Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, who said the South deserved to complete two terms in office after the North had spent eight years in power.
“The North is known for its fairness; the Southerners agreed, persevered, and consented to the North spending two terms of the Presidency. It was only three years ago that power left the North West; we must be seen to be fair and just,” Yari said.
“It’s only fair to allow the South complete its 8 years by voting President Tinubu to continue in office.
“This is the basis for peace and lasting unity that will make Nigeria continue to prosper.”
Governor Idris told the traditional rulers that Kebbi had already endorsed Tinubu for a second term, claiming the state was among the first to mobilise support for the President.
“We are the first state to mobilise our people, declared support and endorsed the President for a second tenure, vowing to vote for him in 2027,” he said.
Idris dismissed contrary claims on social media as false and urged traditional rulers to sustain their support for the APC-led administrations at the federal and state levels. He also praised Tinubu’s performance, saying his administration had delivered benefits to communities across the country.
Yari, in his remarks, defended Tinubu’s record, citing efforts in economic development, agriculture, infrastructure, social welfare and security. He said the President had prioritised insecurity by deploying additional military equipment and special forces to troubled areas, particularly in the North.
He also praised Idris for what he described as the governor’s efforts to transform Kebbi State and mobilise support for Tinubu and the APC.
The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, prayed for the victory of Tinubu and Idris in the 2027 elections, describing the President as an amiable and approachable leader.
“People should elect Tinubu, I know him as amiable and amenable leader, a nice personality,” the monarch said.
He recalled that Tinubu had visited Kebbi before becoming President to chair the launch of his biography, saying the visit reflected respect for traditional institutions and national unity. He also urged the President to review his administration’s progress and consolidate on achievements recorded so far.
