• Turaki-led NWC meets ex-governors, others
From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, has said the party belongs to Nigerians and urged the citizens to retake it.
Turaki, who stated this, yesterday, while meeting with former governors and ministers in the party, said the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership is returning the party to the people and winning the next general election.
Turaki admitted that the party has made some mistakes in the past, stating that it was poised to correct them in its quest for a new lease of life.
“I believe that having this joint interactive session will only enrich members of the National Working Committee in our zeal to take PDP back to the people, in our desire to ensure that PDP captures power again.
“Indeed, moving forward, we will ensure that there is transparency, we will ensure that there is equity, we will ensure that there is fairness and above all, that there is justice in what PDP will be doing as far as our relationship with Nigerian people are concerned.
“So, I want to use this opportunity to assure Nigerians that PDP is your party. Please take back your party and in doing so, tell us what you want, tell us how you want what you want, tell us when you want what you want and we will give it to you.
“I want to say that this meeting is going to be a family meeting. And the implication of having a family meeting is that we look at ourselves face to face and we tell ourselves the truth.
“Yes, mistakes have been made. But we are human. We are not infallible. But the strongest thing about us in PDP is that we admit that mistakes have been made. And having admitted that mistakes have been made, it means then that we now are ready to correct those mistakes.”
Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, who spoke on behalf of former ministers, said Nigerians having tasted the PDP administration as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC) are in a better position to determine which of the two is better. He expressed confidence that the Turaki-led NWC will lead the opposition party to victory in 2027, stating that the leadership has started on a good note.
“The chairman has just reminded us that the PDP government of 16 years have quite a lot to show and demonstrate. And each and every one of us contributed in one way or the other into that history, into that performance.
“So much so that many Nigerians on our streets have said, please return us to where you took over from us. This has been on the lips of most ordinary Nigerians.
“And people say, unless you test the soup of other people’s home, you will never appreciate the sweetness of your own home’s soup. So, Nigerians have tested the soup of other homes, and they are now in a position to make a decision.
“I assure you, it is not about the number. It is about courage, commitment and the determination as we’ve seen in the chairman and members of the National Working Committee that will deliver us in 2027, by the grace of God.
“And we, the ministers, commend the current national chairman, who has stirred the ship, keeping us together. So we commend the national chairman for keeping us together as a family, and will continue to be as such.
“We pray PDP will be growing from strength to strength. And speaking on behalf of one and all of the ministers, we assure you of our support, of our commitment and cooperation at all times. We will be waiting for your call at the shortest notice to serve and join hands with you to move the PDP forward.”
