Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has said President Bola Tinubu would defeat Peter Obi by more than seven million votes in the 2027 presidential election if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not on the ballot.
Adeyanju made the claim in a post on Facebook on Thursday, amid the crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following a Federal High Court judgement nullifying the party’s leadership and the emergence of Atiku as its presidential candidate.
Despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) clearing 18 candidates for the election, many political analysts see the 2027 presidential race as a three-horse contest between Tinubu, Atiku and Obi.
Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Kano strongman, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
Adeyanju said, “Tinubu will defeat Obi/Kwankwaso with more than 7million votes if Atiku is not on the ballot. It will be a walk over from the minute Atiku is not on the ballot.
“Even if Atiku campaigns for Obi, Tinubu will still defeat him.”
According to him, northerners will not vote for Obi.
The Kogi State-born political commentator said, “No section of the country is more politically knowledgeable and sophisticated than northerners. They understand politics so well.
“Atiku is the greatest threat to Tinubu’s re-election. Everyone that understands Nigeria political history knows this. The dynamics and sentiment in northern Nigeria is not looking good for the ruling party.”
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had ruled that the emergence of the Senator David Mark-led caretaker committee violated ADC’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution, and ordered INEC not to recognise decisions taken at the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting, including the process that produced Atiku.
The ADC has rejected the judgement and vowed to appeal.
Adeyanju’s comments come as opposition figures warn that the court judgement, if allowed to stand, could knock Atiku out of the 2027 race and alter the political calculations ahead of the election.
The ADC has described the judgement as an attempt to cripple the opposition, insisting it would challenge it through every available judicial process.
