Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) meets with President Bola Tinubu and the governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) at the Presidential Villa.
President Tinubu will be the Special Guest of Honour at the high-level summit, which is being hosted by the Progressive Governors and is set to start at 11:00 a.m. at the State House Banquet Hall.
The invitation sent to the NLC leadership is viewed as an attempt to strengthen communication between the federal government, state governors, and organized labour at a time of increased economic hardship and political shifts ahead of 2027.
The meeting of top labour leaders at the State House is expected to mark a significant moment in ongoing efforts to align governance priorities with workers’ interests.
It was discovered that the summit’s objectives are to promote stakeholder cooperation, governance discourse, and inclusive involvement in national development projects throughout the federation.
According to NLC sources, the labor leadership plans to personally deliver their demands charter to President Tinubu during the conference.
The NLC’s charter includes provisions for raising wages and safeguarding lives and jobs in the face of Nigeria’s economic and environmental changes.

The charter calls for the establishment of a special Just Transition Fund, the creation of a large number of green jobs, reskilling initiatives, improved social protection, and formalized tripartite communication between the government, businesses, and labour.
According to labour sources who spoke to reporters, the summit may prove crucial in light of current tensions over inflation, pay issues, and economic reforms. While political analysts point out its possible influence on political alignment ahead of 2027, labor insiders see it as a test of the government’s willingness to deliver tangible commitments rather than just words.
It was gathered that the NLC leadership’s top priorities include providing guarantees to protect workers from layoffs linked to economic and climate transitions, setting up a fund to support impacted communities and workers, and investing in sustainable industries and renewable energy to create good, union-protected jobs.
It also includes healthcare access, unemployment safety nets, government-sponsored training programs for developing industries, and tripartite discussion that gives workers a say in economic and policy changes.
The NLC continues to be a potent mobilization bloc with millions of members in key sectors, whose position can influence public opinion in times of economic crisis.
A labour leader said, “Wage debates, fuel subsidy removals, and inflation have tested labour-government relations.
“Direct engagement at Aso Rock signals an attempt to reset the narrative — or prevent escalation. Labour is a decisive political force heading into the 2027 elections. The summit could reset labour-government relations amid economic pressures.”
He added that “governors’ involvement signals coordinated political alignment, and its outcome may determine if negotiation replaces street protests as the main channel of labour influence.”
