Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has declared that President Bola Tinubu has already “defeated himself” ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that the administration’s handling of the economy, insecurity and governance has eroded public confidence.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adebayo said the Tinubu administration was merely counting down to the end of its four-year tenure, insisting that Nigerians were no longer satisfied with the direction of the country.
“Tinubu has defeated himself. His government is outgoing,” Adebayo said, maintaining that the administration had failed to fulfil the core responsibility of government by addressing the challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians.
The SDP presidential candidate argued that worsening poverty, rising insecurity and what he described as poor governance had undermined the government’s credibility, stressing that the 2027 election should focus on solving Nigeria’s problems rather than political personalities.
Adebayo also backed efforts aimed at greater political cooperation but emphasised that his priority was building national unity instead of merely assembling an opposition alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, “Our focus should be on uniting Nigerians, not just uniting politicians.”
He maintained that the outcome of the 2027 presidential election would ultimately depend on the willingness of Nigerians to participate in the electoral process and their confidence that their votes would count.
Adebayo urged citizens to remain engaged in the democratic process, arguing that meaningful political change would only come through active voter participation and credible elections.
His comments come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties intensifying consultations over possible alliances while the ruling APC prepares to defend its mandate.
