From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta
Ahead of the presidential election in January 2027, the convener of The Alternative Movement and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has called on the non-indigene and hunters’ associations in Ogun State to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.
Showunmi, who described the presidential poll as a “liberation election”, made this call during consultation visits to the secretariat of non-indigene associations and office of the hunters’ association, located in Leme and Itoko areas of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He appealed to the associations to mobilise their members and ensure that their votes were cast for Tinubu, noting their support had been valuable to him and his political activities in the state.
“This next election is the election that we are going to call the election of liberation. All the votes, let nobody sleep that day, all the votes must go to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
Showunmi described non-indigenes living in Ogun as an important part of the state’s social and economic development, disclosing that he had always regarded them as “Ogun Tribe”.
He further urged them to mobilise voters across the three senatorial districts of the state – Ogun Central, Ogun East and Ogun West.
“The objective should go beyond merely winning the election to secure a large margin of votes for Tinubu. The 2027 election should also demonstrate the political strength of the South, saying that political power must continue to rotate among the regions, therefore Tinubu must complete his eight-year tenure to deliver for Nigeria,” he noted.

While describing non-indigenous communities as “valuable partners in progress”, Showunmi stressed that they must participate actively in the 2027 election, noting their votes would be significant in determining the outcome of the presidential contest.
Responding on behalf of the communities which consisted of Igbo, Hausa, Igede, Igala, Tiv, Edo and Calabar, the chairman of the Non-Indigene Association of Ogun State (Egba zone), Francis Nwanze, declared the support of the group for President Tinubu through the advocacy of Showunmi and his long-time relationship with the association.
He recalled how the group has been enjoying Showunmi’s support for every activity they have organised, including his financial contributions during the inauguration of the group.
Nwanze explained that the group was established 20 years ago, with coordinators across the 20 local government areas of Ogun State.
He, however, assured Showunmi of their support and declared the readiness of the association to mobilise support and deliver massive votes for Tinubu in 2027.
Hosting Showunmi earlier at their base in Itoko area of Abeokuta, the hunters’ association pledged their support for the re-election of President Tinubu, while also praying for his victory.
The chairman of the association, Araba Yusuf Alao, disclosed that the group comprised over 1,000 hunters, assuring that all will deliver their votes for the president.
