…Promises to transform state, fix rural roads, healthcare

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has replaced its earlier governorship candidate in Nasarawa State with former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Adamu was formally presented as the party’s new governorship candidate at an event attended by party leaders, members and supporters, who hailed his emergence as a fresh opportunity for the party to take over the leadership of the state.
The former police chief, while accepting the candidacy, promised to work with the people of Nasarawa State and development partners to address what he described as bad governance and accelerate development across the state.
“I am delighted that the primaries have been conducted. I’m also delighted that we have been declared the winner,” Adamu said.
He added that his administration, if elected, would “work tirelessly to change the bad governance that is taking place in Nasarawa State for the better, Insha’Allah.”
“We will not allow the government to fall into the hands of another bad person. We will work with all the people of Nasarawa State, and our supporting partners and development partners all over the country and the world, to bring development to Nasarawa State,” he said.
Adamu identified poor rural roads, healthcare, agriculture and the management of the state’s mineral resources as key areas requiring urgent attention.
According to him, the neglect of roads in the hinterlands had affected communities across the state, promising that his administration would prioritise their rehabilitation.
“We will not neglect social amenities that are required. We’ve gone round the state, we have seen that all the roads in the hinterlands are neglected. We’ll make sure that we take care of those,” he said.
He also promised to improve healthcare delivery by ensuring that residents in rural communities have access to quality medical services.

On agriculture, Adamu described Nasarawa as an agrarian state with vast expanses of land suitable for farming, saying his administration would invest substantially in the sector.
The SDP candidate also expressed concern over the exploitation of mineral resources in the state, promising to review the process and ensure that greater benefits accrue to the people.
Adamu further promised that his campaign would be issue-based, with specific programmes tailored to the needs of communities across the state.
Earlier, the National Chairman of the SDP, Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe while addressing party supporters at the event, described the presentation of Adamu as a “historic day” for the party and Nasarawa State.
His words: “Today is a historic day for the SDP, and indeed for Nasarawa State. That one of your best, IGP Abubakar Adamu, is today being presented to contest the candidature of the Social Democratic Party to transform Nasarawa State under the SDP platform.”
He urged party members to support Adamu, describing his record in the Nigeria Police Force as one characterised by discipline, integrity and commitment to the rule of law.
“I am sure he doesn’t need introduction to you. He has led the Nigerian Police with utmost discipline, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law, and made Nasarawa State and Nigeria proud,” he said.
He also called on party members to support the SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, as well as its candidates for the National Assembly and State Assembly elections.
The national chairman urged members to remain united behind the SDP at all levels, declaring that the party was determined to secure electoral victories across the country.
“My dear Nasarawa State SDP members, please, I want to urge you, we want nothing but SDP,” he said, calling for support for the party at the presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly levels.
With the substitution of Adamu as its governorship candidate, the SDP is expected to intensify its preparations for the 2027 election, with the former IGP expected to lead the party’s campaign in its bid to take control of Nasarawa State.
