The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to mobilise voters in Rivers State and the FCT to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where he was assigned responsibility for coordinating the President’s campaign in Rivers State and the FCT.

Expressing confidence in his ability to secure support for Tinubu in both locations, the minister said he considered the assignment a major responsibility.

“I’m pledged, by the grace of God, Rivers and FCT will vote massively for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That is my joy. I have only two assignments, Rivers and FCT,” he said.

Wike also urged members of the campaign council to focus on securing electoral victories rather than being carried away by the positions and responsibilities assigned to them.

According to him, campaign officials should be judged by their ability to deliver votes for the President in their respective states.

“What is important is that you deliver your state. If you don’t deliver your state and the President wins, don’t say we have won,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor also defended the Tinubu administration’s approach to governance, arguing that the President had shown leadership by addressing difficult national issues that previous governments had failed to resolve.

Wike cited the proposed establishment of state police as an example, saying successive administrations had acknowledged its potential to tackle insecurity but had not taken decisive steps towards implementing it.

“By the grace of God, in the next few months, I’m sure that will be passed to have state police in Nigeria. That is leadership. That is leadership,” he stated.

On opposition politics, Wike maintained that belonging to an opposition party should not prevent politicians from acknowledging government policies they consider beneficial.

He explained that democracy provides room for opposition parties to scrutinise the government, identify neglected issues and draw attention to areas requiring improvement.

“Democracy allows opposition to be there, to look at things that the ruling party or the ones in power are not concentrating on. Democracy is to bring out these issues you are not tackling,” he said.

Speaking as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike argued that opposition politicians should assess government policies on their merits rather than reject them simply because they were introduced by the ruling party.

He also expressed confidence that members of the campaign council would reconvene after the election to celebrate Tinubu’s victory.

“January 16th, 2027, to the glory of God, we will come back here and say thank you to the Almighty God,” Wike said.
