The Kaduna Central senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Shehu Sani, has said the 2027 presidential race should be contested by southern candidates to allow the South complete its eight years in power.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, argued that while rotation is not codified in the constitution equity and national unity demand that power remains in the South until 2031.
Daily Sun reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cleared 18 presidential candidates for the January 16, 2027 presidential election based on a final list released September 12, 2026.
While 13 of the candidates hail from the Southern part of the country, five are northerners, namely Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori, Aliyu Abass-Bin, Kabiru Yusuf, and Peter Ada Agada.
Sani said the presidential race should only be contested by Southern candidates, including President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, Omoyele Sowore, Donald Duke, Prince Adewole Adebayo, and others.
He warned that those who dismiss rotation in 2027 should not expect it to be respected when power is due to return to the North in 2031.
“The 2027 political contest should be between Tinubu, Peter Obi, Sowore, Makinde, Adebayo, Duke and other Southern Candidates. The South should complete its eight years. Its not constitutional but it’s equitable. We should not bury our heads in the sand and deny the realities and complexities of our history. Those who say there shouldn’t be respect for the principle of Rotation of power in 2027, should know that it WILL NOT be respected in 2031,” he stated in an X post on Thursday.
