The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has assured the international community, particularly the foreign election observers, that the 2027 general elections will be very peaceful, transparent, free and fair.

IGP Disu gave the assurance while allaying the fears and apprehension of foreign election observers that are expressing deep reservations over their safety during the election.

Represented by Francis Idu at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP disclosed that plans are underway.

While reiterating that the election template will guarantee the security of the visitors, he said that the lead security agency is planning an operation of no tolerance to election violence before, during and after the poll.

According to him: “The general security situation of those cities like Edo, Enugu, Taraba, Plateau among others will be reviewed and other ungoverned spaces to ensure that those places with security concerns will be addressed.

“Come December this year, we will do the review to ensure that any act of violence in the states will be curtailed and arrested. We will launch operation no electoral violence to discourage it in whatever form or shape during the election,” he said.

In his assurance of a peaceful election during the poll: “I want to assure the foreign election observers that the forthcoming election will be very peaceful. They have no reason to entertain any fear about the election.

“We have mapped out our strategy and we have more than enough manpower to protect all of them. Our election template will guarantee their security. We are planning operations with no tolerance to election violence,” he revealed.

Equally weighing in on the election security, the chairman of INEC revealed that the commission will organise a security stakeholders’ meeting that the IGP, the military chiefs and heads of other security agencies will be physically present.

He said: “We are planning to engage with the stakeholders so that all the stakeholders including the IGP, all the service chiefs and heads of other security agencies will be physically present so that we can sit down again and review our strategy concerning all these security concerns.”

“We have continued to improve our electoral management and we are determined to ensure that the 2027 elections meet the expectations of Nigerians.

“The lessons from the elections we have conducted will guide us as we prepare for the 2027 general elections. Our objective is to ensure that the process is credible, transparent and acceptable to Nigerians.

“Nigerians should be assured that INEC will do everything within its mandate to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections in 2027,” he said.
