A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed has announced former Cross River State governorship candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, as its consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

The declaration was made on Tuesday during the collation of results by the PDP Presidential Primaries Collation Committee at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, where officials said the outcome followed consultations and voice votes conducted across several states within the factional structure.

Chairman of the collation committee and former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, presented Onor as the consensus candidate after what was described as consultations with party stakeholders across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the committee, the process reflected the preference of members who participated in the exercise, leading to Onor’s emergence as the sole aspirant within the faction.

Following the announcement, PDP officials led by the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, presented Onor with the party flag and a certificate of return, formally affirming him as the faction’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election cycle.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including National Commissioners Abdullahi Zuru and Prof. Rhoda Habor Gumus, monitored the proceedings at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Onor, a former senator and governorship candidate in Cross River State, had earlier declared interest in the 2027 presidential race and purchased nomination forms before the consensus arrangement was reached.

The development highlights the continuing internal divisions within the PDP, as rival blocs position themselves ahead of the next general election.

Party leaders are expected to provide further clarification as the situation develops.

The declaration was made on Tuesday during the collation of results at the PDP Presidential Primaries Collation Committee exercise held at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, where party officials said the decision followed consultations and voice votes conducted across several states.

The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction said Onor emerged as the sole aspirant after internal consultations effectively streamlined the contest within the bloc.

Chairman of the collation committee and former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, formally presented Onor after reviewing inputs said to have been gathered from party stakeholders across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the committee, the process was guided by consultations with members and stakeholders, which it insisted reflected the position of the participating faction.

Following the announcement, PDP leaders present, led by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, handed Onor the party flag and a certificate of return, formally confirming him as the faction’s presidential candidate.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including National Commissioners Abdullahi Zuru and Prof. Rhoda Habor Gumus, were present to observe the exercise at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Onor, a former senator and Cross River governorship candidate, had earlier expressed interest in the 2027 presidential race and obtained nomination forms before emerging through the consensus arrangement.

The development adds to the PDP’s ongoing internal crisis, with multiple power blocs continuing to jostle for legitimacy and control ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

Party leaders are expected to release further clarification in the coming days as questions persist over unity within the party’s structure.
