The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has pledged to reform Nigeria’s healthcare system, improve infrastructure and ensure greater transparency in the management of the country’s resources if elected president.
Obi stated this during the inauguration and opening of the NDC Delta State campaign office in Asaba, the state capital. He said his administration would focus on addressing challenges affecting Nigerians rather than encouraging unnecessary medical trips abroad.
He noted that Nigerians intending to seek medical attention abroad should first be referred to hospitals within the country, while overseas treatment would only be considered where necessary.
“We want you to visit the hospitals here so we can fix it. We will make it work,” he said, stressing that anyone who needed to travel abroad for medical treatment would have to obtain a referral.
Obi also expressed concern about insecurity in Nigeria, saying the government must remain focused on protecting citizens and addressing the conditions responsible for insecurity.
He further promised to prioritise development in the Niger Delta, particularly infrastructure and the equitable use of resources generated from the region.
He cited the condition of the East-West Road as an example of the infrastructure challenges confronting the region, despite its contribution to Nigeria’s wealth.
“East-West Road, you cannot even pass Asaba; you cannot even drive from anywhere in the South, yet they are producing the wealth we share every month,” he said.
He, however, pledged that under his administration, residents of the Niger Delta would see greater impact from the resources generated from the region.
“One thing I can assure Niger Delta is that the days when you do not see the impact of your wealth are gone,” he said.
Obi said the proposed changes would be driven by transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
“We are going to be transparent. We will tell you where everything is going to,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the party had supporters committed to its message of change. He added that his administration, if elected, would seek to demonstrate to Nigerians the benefits of the wealth generated by the country and ensure that public resources were managed more effectively.
Omo-Agege Targets Three Senate Seats for NDC in Delta
Former Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has said the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will protect the votes of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election.
Omo-Agege disclosed this in Asaba during the inauguration of the party’s Delta State campaign secretariat.
He said the party’s supporters would not only vote for Obi but would also ensure that their votes were protected.
“For that reason, we have resolved, Your Excellency, that not only are we going to stand to vote for you, we are going to stand to protect your vote,” he said.
Omo-Agege said worsening challenges in electricity, employment and healthcare were among the factors driving support for Obi in the state.
He also said the NDC was targeting all three senatorial seats in Delta State and a majority of the House of Representatives seats.
“We are going to take the three Senate seats. We are going to take the three-over-three, and we are also going to win the majority of the House of Representatives seats on that day,” he said.
He added that the Delta NDC leadership had resolved to support Deacon Chris Iyovwaye as its governorship candidate.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the NDC governorship candidate in Delta State, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, urged Nigerians to take their political destiny into their own hands ahead of the 2027 general election.
Iyovwaye expressed concern over what he described as the poor state of governance and the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
According to Iyovwaye, Nigerians are contending with inadequate healthcare, poor roads, insecurity and unemployment. He called for greater accountability in the management of public resources.
Iyovwaye also alleged that public funds were being diverted for private interests and called for government revenue and other resources to be channelled towards improving the welfare of citizens.
The NDC candidate further urged his supporters to remain committed to the party’s political movement and participate actively in the electoral process.
“We cannot leave this country the way it is. We must all rise and take responsibility for shaping the country’s future,” Iyovwaye said.
He also expressed confidence that the 2027 elections would provide an opportunity for what he described as a turnaround in governance.
